John 21:4
But when the morning was now come, Jesus stood on the shore: but the disciples knew not that it was Jesus. (John 21:4)
Was now come.
Textual evidence is divided (cf. p. 146) between this and the reading “was now coming,” suggesting, perhaps, that it was just beginning to be light.
Knew not.
Perhaps their eyes were “holden” like those of the disciples on the way to Emmaus (Luke 24:16). Perhaps the light was as yet indistinct. Mary, also, had not recognized Jesus when He first appeared to her (John 20:14-16).
