That is, in the same way, or likewise, the Philippians should be glad and rejoice with Paul. Instead of being grieved at the prospect of his giving his life, the apostle would have his friends share his joy in being permitted to yield his life with benefit to them and the gospel. The epistle lays great stress on joy, not only as a privilege, but as a duty, following from Christian faith and demonstrating its reality.
