And he settled his countenance stedfastly, until he was ashamed: and the man of God wept. (2 Kings 8:11)
Until he was ashamed.
Elisha seems to have looked Hazael squarely in the face and kept his eyes fastened upon him. Whether Hazael had previously cherished secret ambitions to sit on his master’s throne is not known. If he had, he may have suspected that Elisha was now reading his inmost thoughts.
