2 Kings 18:33
Hath any of the gods of the nations delivered at all his land out of the hand of the king of Assyria? (2 Kings 18:33)
Any of the gods.
The Assyrians had good reason to make such a boast. They had gone everywhere with seemingly uninterrupted success. No gods seemed able to deliver their lands from Assyrian might. Ashur seemed to be the most powerful god of all. Not even the God of the Hebrews appeared to be a match for Ashur, for Samaria had met its doom and Judah for years had been under Assyrian power. Little did the Assyrians understand that it was disobedience to Jehovah that had brought Israel low, and that the Assyrian successes had been allowed by the very God against whom they now boasted.
