Luke 3:22
And the Holy Ghost descended in a bodily shape like a dove upon him, and a voice came from heaven, which said, Thou art my beloved Son; in thee I am well pleased. (Luke 3:22)
My beloved Son.
See on Matt. 3:17. Codex Bezae adds, “today I have begotten thee.” While here affirming the true deity of Jesus, Luke proceeds at once to prove His true humanity (vs. 23-38). Matthew opens his account of the gospel story by presenting the genealogy of Jesus (see on Matt. 1:1); Luke reserves his genealogy for the moment when Jesus took up His life mission. Moses similarly gives his own pedigree after recording his first public appearance as spokesman for God and leader of Israel (see Ex. 6:16-20).
In a bodily shape.
Only Luke qualifies the dove thus.
