2 Samuel 1:26
I am distressed for thee, my brother Jonathan: very pleasant hast thou been unto me: thy love to me was wonderful, passing the love of women. (2 Samuel 1:26)
Passing the love of women.
By this touching expression David showed the depth and sincerity of Jonathan’s love. Jonathan suffered the loss of crown and kingdom because of his love for David.
True love consists in thinking of others, caring for others, and doing for others. Selfishness consists in requiring of others what one is unwilling to do himself. To Jonathan, the friendship of David meant more than fame and fortune.
