“그는 결코 인간의 연약성이 개인적 죄가 되도록 허락하지 않았다. 비록 그가 죄에 유혹을 받았을 지라도 그는 결코 죄에 동참하지 않았고, 그는 결코 악이나 죄 된 성향들을 계발시키지 않았다.”⁴⁴ (360.1)

 예수께서 죄 없는 인성을 가졌다는 견해를 정당화시키기 위하여 헤펜스 톨(Heppenstall)은 죄는 “자연적인 증식으로 말미암아” 전달되지 않는다고 단언하였다. 하나의 영적인 일이 되기 위하여 죄 자체가 “유전적으로 전달”⁴⁵ 될 수 없다. 만약 이것이 사실이라면 모든 인류에게 이것이 타당하여야 하는데 분명히 그런 경우는 없다. 예수께서 “여자에게서 나게 하시고 율법 아래 나게”(갈 4:4)하셨다고 선언함으로 바울은 예수는 모든 인간들과 같이 “그는 아담의 모든 자녀들과 같이 유전 법칙이 끼쳐온 결과를 받으셨다. 이러한 결과가 어떠하였는지는 예수의 육신의 조상의 역사 가운데 드러나 있다. 그는 이러한 유전을 지니고 우리의 슬픔과 시험을 당하시고 우리에게 죄 없는 생애의 모본을 주시기 위하여 오셨다”⁴⁶고 확증하였다. 예수와 그의 인간과의 차이는 모든 인류가 유전에 의해 죄인이라는 사실에 근거하지 않는다. 그들은 “모든 사람이 죄를 범하였으매”(롬 5:12) 죄인 들이다. 오직 예수는 죄 있는 육신의 모양으로 오셨을지라도 결코 죄를 짓지 않았다. (360.2)

 명백하게, 그리스도의 조상들은 단순히 ‘무흠한 약점들’ 이외의 것들을 소유하였다. “그리스도께서는 퇴보된 인류의 연약함을 취하셨다. 이렇게 하심으로써만 그는 인류를 쇠퇴의 깊은 구렁에서 구출하실 수 있으셨다”⁴⁷고 단언하였다. “타락한 상태에 있는 인성을 당신 스스로 취하셨으나 그리스도께서는 추호도 인간의 죄에 참여하시지 않으셨다.”⁴⁸ (360.3)

 이 역설을 설명하기 위하여 오점 없는 개념을 가지며 원죄설의 오류로부터 우리 스스로 벗어나야 한다는 것은 피치 못할 일이다. 이것이 바로 성서에 기초해서 우리가 마지막 장에서 해결하려는 과제이다. (360.4)
