프랑스가 자랑하는 파리의 노트르담의 서편 파사드이다. 이 파사드 중앙에는 직경이 약 10m나 되는 태양 원반이 웅장한 “장미창” 으로 되어 있다. 누가 보아도 “이 태양은 예수 그리스도시다” 라는 것을 쉽게 알 수 있게끔 이 태양 원반 속에 성모 마리아가 아기 예수를 팔에 안고 서 있는 모습의 상을 안치해 놨다. 즉 “예수를 태양신으로 숭배하는 여신전” 이라는 것이다. 이 성당은 A.D. 1163년에 주교 모리스드 쉴 리가 본당부터 건 축하기 시작했고, 75년 후에 완성한 것이다. 그 후 A.D. 1245년에 잡을 건축했다. 그리고 1345년에 대성당이 완성됐다. 프랑스 혁명 기간인 1793년에 이 성당을 “이성의 여신” 에게 봉헌하였기에 파손을 면했던 것이다. 웅장하고도 매우 아름다운 성모 마리아 대성당이다.
