Since Paul planned to delay Timothy’s departure until he should see how things would turn, it seems likely that some crisis was at hand so far as his imprisonment was concerned. Since the next verse expresses his hope shortly to visit Philippi, there may have been some thought of release, in which case Timothy would take the glad tidings to the Macedonian believers.
