As recorded in ch. 25:16-18, the command to smite the Midianites had already been given to Moses; now he was to organize the military expedition to execute God’s will. The Midianites, at the suggestion of Balaam, had led Israel into grievous sin, which in turn brought a plague from God upon His people.
