And ye shall rejoice before the Lord your God, ye, and your sons, and your daughters, and your menservants, and your maidservants, and the Levite that is within your gates; forasmuch as he hath no part nor inheritance with you. (Deuteronomy 12:12)
The tribe of Levi was consecrated to God’s holy service, and consequently had no part in the usual vocations by which men make a living. The Levite had no land (ch. 10:9), and therefore received his support from the congregation (chs. 14:27; 16:11, 14; 18:1-8; 26:11).
