And it came to pass in the morning, that Jonathan went out into the field at the time appointed with David, and a little lad with him. (1 Samuel 20:35)
By taking the “lad” and the bow and arrows Jonathan disguised the purpose of his journey into the field. He would be suspected merely of going on a hunt or for target practice.
