만약 “10 일”을 문자적으로만 이해한다면 왜 예수께서 서머나 교회에게 그들이 당한 가장 경미한 박해의 하나에 대해서만 미리 경고하셨는가하는 의문이 남게 된다. 그러나, 만약 서머나 교회를 초대 교회시대를 상징하는 것으로 이해하고 “십 일”을 초대 교회시대의 10 년으로 이해한다면 서머나 교회에 보내는 편지의 기별은 뜻이 통하게 된다. (143.1)

 f. 실제에 있어서 글자 그대로의 일곱 교회는 그 모두가 303~313년의 디오클레티아누스 박해를 치렀다. 만약 이들 일곱 교회가 당시의 일곱 지역 교회를 국한하여 나타내는 것이라면 어찌하여 일곱 교회 모두가 그들이 당하게 되는 디오클레티아누스 황제의 박해에 대해 똑같이 경고를 받지 않았는가 하는 의문이 남게 된다. 그러나, 만약 일곱 편지가 교회 역사의 일곱 시대를 연속적으로 나타내는 것이라면 이 일곱 시대의 한 시대에 속한 교인들에게 닥치게 된 디오클레티아누스 박해에 대해서는 그 시대를 상징하는 서머나 교회에게만 미리 경고되어야 할 것이다.  g. 요한계시록 1장 7절에 나타나고 있는 재림의 약속은 비조건적이다. “볼지어다 구름을 타고 오시리라 각인의 눈이 그를” 볼 것이다. 에베소 교회(2:5) · 버가모 교회(2:16) · 사데 교회(3: 3)에 보내는 편지에도 그리스도의 재림의 약속 또는 경고가 있다. 그러나, 이 약속들은 모두 조건적이다. 교회가 회개하지 않으면 그리스도가 임할 것이라 하였다. 반면 두아디라 교회의 충실한 신자들에게는 “내가 올 때까지 굳게 잡으라”고 격려했으며(계 2:25) 빌라델비아 교인들에게는 “굳게 잡으라”고 격려하면서 그러면 “내가 속히 임하리라” 고 약속하셨다(계 3:11). 이 비조건적인 약속들은 세상 끝에 있을 그리스도의 재림을 말하는 것이다. 동시에 “굳게 잡으라”는 말에는 상당 기간 재림이 지연될 것이란 함축이 들어 있는 것이다. 그런데, 그리스도가 속히 오신다는 약속은 세상의 끝에 가까운 여섯째 교회에 보내는 편지에서만 나타나고 있다는 점도 주목할만한 사실이다.  총괄해서 말한다면, 이상에서 소개한 여러 가지 참고 사항들을 미루어 볼 때 일곱 교회에 보내는 편지는 다니엘와 요한계시록의 여러 다른 이상(異像)들과 마찬가지로 상징적인 것으로 이해되어야 할 것이다. 또 다니엘의 예언들이나 예수님의 감람산 설교와 마찬 가지로 일곱 편지들도 예언자의 시대로부터 세상의 끝날까지의 역사를 포함하고 있는 것으로 보아야 할 것이다. (143.4)
